One of my all time favorite “fun” books – not business books, is “Olivia Joules and the Overactive Imagination” by Helen Fielding. (This is the same author who wrote the Bridget Jones series of books.) It’s a fun read about a young woman who ends up as a “spy” and hilarity ensues. Think: Sex in the City meets James Bond.
The main character, Olivia, has some Rules for Living that she references throughout the book. Her rules guide all of her choices and they are totally goofy and yet, when you think about it, actually profound. Here a couple of my favorites:
Rule 1) Never panic. Stop, breathe, think.
Rule 10) Only buy clothes that make you feel like doing a small dance.
But here is my favorite:
Rule 2) No one is thinking about you. They’re thinking about themselves just like you.
This is a huge element to being willing to fail your way to success, to learn to go for no, to do things that stretch you that others may doubt your sanity over! Do you keep yourself from doing what you want because of others? Many people are willing to easily give you their thoughts, even criticism but then they go on their own way – worried about their own lives, not even thinking about you.
Don’t let your worries of what others will think of you ever, ever, ever stop you.
